The beautiful Mackworth Island State Park is a hidden gem. It is located in Falmouth ME and offers amazing hiking trails. It is a great place to visit with your family and friends.

The loop trail is easy and takes about an hour to complete at a leisurely pace. It also offers breathtaking views of the sea and the city of Portland. Read this first!

Hiking Trails

Located about 10 minutes outside of Portland, Mackworth Island State Park is a hidden gem and the perfect spot to get away from it all. This wonderful park offers beautiful beaches and a walking trail that is dog-friendly!

The easy 1.25-mile trail encircles the island. Along the way, visitors enjoy stunning views of the bay and Portland. They can also stop to watch boats and ferries motor through the Atlantic waters and see seagulls and osprey glide overhead.

The trail surface is packed soil that may be slippery when wet. The terrain is generally level with slopes not exceeding 10%. There are no steps or other barriers to wheelchairs on the main loop. However, the small side trails down to the shore may be inaccessible to some visitors.

Beaches

This hidden gem is a secluded oasis just a short drive from Portland and offers rocky beaches, a scenic walking trail, and views of the eastern end of Portland across Casco Bay. It’s the perfect place to escape to nature without running into crowds of people.

The island is connected to the mainland by a causeway off Andrews Avenue. It was donated to the State of Maine by Governor Percival Baxter for public use and as a wild bird sanctuary. The park is open from dawn to dusk, and a fee is charged.

The easy, circular trail is dog-friendly and offers incredible views of the surrounding ocean. You can also find the pet cemetery of Governor Baxter, which is filled with several headstones of his Irish settlers. Here is another spot to visit.

Fishing

Located on the coast of Casco Bay, Falmouth is a town that effortlessly blends seaside tranquility with vibrant community life. As with all state parks, there is a day-use fee at Mackworth Island State Park. The current cost is $3 for Maine adults, $4 for non-residents, and $1 for senior non-residents and children 5 to 11. A portion of the proceeds benefit Maine Audubon’s Gilsland Farm.

Picnicking

Situated on the picturesque coastline of southern Maine, Falmouth is a sought-after New England destination. Featuring gorgeous natural landscapes, world-class schools, and a close-knit community, the town offers residents the best of both worlds.

Visitors can enjoy a hike on the main trail that encircles the island or explore the rocky cliffs and beaches. There are also a number of picnicking spots, perfect for spreading out a blanket and enjoying a meal with stunning views.

The park is open from dawn to sunset. There is a day-use fee of $3 for adult Maine residents and $4 for non-residents, with senior citizens and children under 5 free. Parking on the island is limited and can fill up quickly, so plan ahead or consider leaving your car parked in Falmouth and walking across the causeway.

Swimming

While not as secluded as Peaks Island or Chebeague, the rocky beach and walking trail around Mackworth Island is a nice way to spend some time in nature. Walk the 1.4-mile perimeter path to enjoy the sights of boats and ferries motoring across Casco Bay. You might also spot seagulls and osprey.

Mackworth Island State Park is open all year from 9 a.m. to sunset, and a fee is charged (currently $3 for Maine residents, $4 for non-residents, and $1 for senior non-residents and children 5-11). You can access the park from the causeway off Andrews Avenue in Falmouth.
